My father's cousin, Joel Meadows,
piloted F8 Crusaders on missions over North Vietnam in 1966 on the Oriskany. Very proud of him.

served with the united states marines proudly, and it was an honor to have served! deployed from alameda naval air station spring 1969. Nixon came aboard outside the golden gate, and was given a display of the O's firepower! what a sight! reached dixie and yankee station, and was immeadiately met with soviet trawlers! what an experience! i still feel today, that nixon should have leveled hanoi with the ordnance that we were protecting! oh well! maybe someday, there will be a leader that has some balls to stand up to terrorists, and whoever attacks our country! semper fi! and God bless these United States of America!

I served aboard the Oriskany from 1969 to 1971 in the Operations/Air Intelligence Office. I used to hang around with my buddies from El Paso, Rudy Zavala, Richard Rubio, Blas Gonzales, and Luis Ortega. Rudy and Richard were in the Communications Department and their buddies used to join us on the beach.

I served on the Oriskany from March 1968 - December 1971. I was a ship's serviceman and worked in the ship's stores, sales office and laundry.

I was onboard fron 1964 to 1969.

I found this web site when looking for some memorabilia on the Mighty "O". We are opening the "Oriskany Diner" in Oriskany NY and are decorating it with a historical theme on Oriskany. We have been to the museum and received info that some of the ship mates will be visiting the area later this year. We are very excited and hope that you will come in for a visit and meal. We would love any pictures people would like to share and have posted in the restaurant. Our son is presently station on the USS Baatan.

Was the squardon AK on night shift and worked for AK1 Arthur Zickafoose, (good friend and boss). Great times, good friends and memories. Would welcome very much to hear fom anyone during that period. My name is Terry Smith. I came aboard as an AC2 and left as an AC1. I served on the Oriskany in 1975-76 in the OC Division telling our great pilots "were to go" from the ship’s CATCC (Carrier Air Traffic Control Center). I was also one of the cartoonists for the "Snoopy" cartoons on the back of the dail;y air plan. Needless to say, serving aboard the “O Boat” was one of my finest life adventures. Like many, when I watched her sink below the waves off Pensacola I cried. Some say she is gone – I just prefer to think of her on her last permanent duty station serving her country in a unique way. I am looking for any of the OC Division members that served on her last Westpac cruse (75-76). Especially looking for (rank at the time) AC1 Jim Smith, ACC Eddie Caldwell, and ACMC Fred Jackson. I have contact info on Richard Wylde, Jim Hendricks and Joe McCormick.

I am also looking for one unnamed F8 pilot who almost went into the South China Sea low fuel and unable to tank or bingo to Subic. I got you down on your last pass at the deck.

I boarded the mighty oriskany in Irwucuna Japan.Bigger than any John Deere tractor this country boy ever saw,but it sure did ride better than a tractor.The lady was my home from oct. 1963 untill june of 1967.v1 was my farm and i had a lot of birds to take care of,chief croft was my mommy,daddy,brother, sister,he along with all his other helpers showed me the ropes. I would to thank you all,and i do. Igot a lot of good lessons,then returned to Al.Retired as Alabama State Trooper after 25 years.Have been in law enforcement nearly 40 years.Curently employed with Troy University as a police officer.The U.S.S ORISKANY was part of my life and i will never forget her,and all the great friends .GOD SPEED EVERYONE

My Father, Louis Broccoli, served on the USS Oriskany 1950-1953/AM3. He has great memories of those years and loves to tell his stories. He is hoping to meet up with some shipmates at the 2009 reunion.

My father, Robert Stefanov, served on the "Mighty O" during the Korean war. He was the photographer and I have many of his pictures which I treasure so dear. When I get a chance, I would like to upload them so all can enjoy for years to come! My father passed away December 27, 2005. He had planned on being there for Her sinking, but God needed him before then, but I am sure he was looking down on that day! He was so proud to have served on the "Mighty O"!

I was on the Oriskany from march of 72 till march of 73 when we came back from westpac.I went to v-1 div. then to v-5 then to v-2 arresting gear.I stayed in the reserves switched my rate to cook. I'd pna all the time switched over to the usaf made E-7 and retired in 2000 Jan.What a ride.Will post more pictures when i find them.First time i've been on this web site nice.

He was born in Durham, NY on July 26, 1930, son of the late Charles “Jack” and Anna (Weidinger) Gifford. <b>Jack was a career Navy man, being discharged in 1968 as a Chief Petty Officer. He served on many different ships including the USS Saratoga, the USS Oriskany, the USS Quill Back submarine and his last ship the USS Samuel Gompers.</b> He had received the Good Conduct Medal (5), National Defense Service Medal (2) and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (1). He was a member and Past Commander of the Durham Valley Post #1416 American Legion, a member and past commander of the Greene County American Legion, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and a former member of the Oak Hill Durham Vol. Fire Co. Came aboard oriskany sept 68. M divison Generator gang vietnam cruse 69-70-71. Liked the pic's of engine room and fire room's before sinking so much was gone but could make it out then the memories started to come back me hobie and holdhouse worked for 4 days no sleep to fix burned out bearings on #3 turbo generator in #3 fire room hot as hell. Does eaneyone remember the power going out whin we were in Hong Kong cruse of 70? We had a bad time of cardboard in our pumps I started #3 generator in an almost pitch black #3 fireroom. Would like to hear from generator gang and engineroom buds and see moore pic's from engineroom and fireroom's. Yankee

I boarded the "Mighty O" in "66" at Humters Point where she was recovering from the fire. I was unrated, but lucky enough to be sent to OI division where I spent all of my enlistment. I have visited her memorial twice, but supprised how few Viet Nam vets were there. Maybe her new location will renew some interest. Looking back, I think the experience provided more good memories than bad

I was on the Oriskany from 1961 until I received orders to CINCPACFLT in 1964. I was assigned to "X" Division and worked in the print shop with Tim Cossey, Lauren "Willy" Willard, Ralph White, Ralph Cooper, "Moe" Macias, and Grady Herron. Wonder what happened to those guys, as well as all the guys I knew in the Personnel and captain's office. Too bad she was sunk...would have made a great museum in San Diego!!

Lots of times to remember cruse of 70 #3 gen. burned up while on the line me Hobie and holdhouse worked 4 streight days without sleep in the heat of # 3 fireroom something I will never forget. The girl Belin in Olongapo, the hike around Grande Island, Hong Kong, Hot days on the line water fights in #3 fireroom sometime the heat got to ya.

On board mighty o 68-72 good old days

Westpac 1970/1971 I was in CR Div and later transferred to S3 as a ships barber.

Was in the Supply Div 1974-75.

I served aboard the Oriskany during the '71 & '72 cruises on OE div. as an ETR3. It was not my first duty station but it was one of the best. By the time that I arrived, I had been in the Navy for 4 years and thought that I had seen it all but the Oriskany proved me wrong. It was a great ship with an even greater crew.

I served on the "O" from July 1966-July 1968. Quartermaster under three different captains.

My brother Hans Thomas "Tom" Vogt passed away June 17, 2009. He loved the "Mighty O" and has requested that his dog tags be laid on the deck which we will do in near future.

My Father Paul C. Kellum served on The Mighty "O" 1962-64. He passed away January 22, 2009 and requested to be buried at sea. I'm planning a vacation to Pensacola, Florida this summer so we can spread his ashes where the USS Oriskany was laid to rest. If anyone can recommend persons to contact for chartering a boat, I would appreciate it very much.

Claude G. Wiggins Jr. CPO enlisted in 1962 served as a Parachute Rigger and worked with survival equipment. He retired in 1994. He passed away Nov. 16, 1998 from lung cancer. He is survived by a daughter Phyllis Suesette Wiggins. Picture to follow

Was a MM3 attached to "A" division from 1963-1965. Worked in the plants that generated liquid oxegen & liguid nitrogen. I had a real lump in my throat when watching the O sink in florida while watching a cable channel.This is a great website,Thanks I was a BT in the #1 fireroom and made the west pac of 1971. CANNED HEAT was painted on the hull goin down to #1.

My brother was a sailor on the Mighty "O" between 1973-1976 I believe. His name is John M. Hemmings. My brother and several of his friends joined the Navy on a buddy plan right after high school and were all stationed on the Mighty "O". His friends were Randy Bledsoe, Kenny Lilly, and Rick Mullins. Does anyone remember my brother and his friends?

When I first saw the sinking of the Oriskany I immediately called my brother and told him it was on... he said that he had watched it and cried.
I have watched it several times and have almost cried myself, I can just imagine the heartache that the other crew members have felt.

I reported onboard in 1958 and served in V-2 Div until my discharge in 1961. I made ABE2 while onboard. I later reenlisted and retired in 1988 as an ISC.

As a USS AMERICA CV66 sailor I just wanted to say I know how you feel when your ship is gone. At least you can take comfort in knowing it at least provides a home for sea creatures. I know you miss her as I miss my own ship.

My grandfather was a sailor on this ship. I was just wondering if anyone on this website knew him. He was on the ship from 1950-1954.
His name was Jack Cuccolino.
Unfortunatly, he passed away in May 1997. I was only 7 years old at the time and he was not able to really tell me much of his life. Now I am in college, and i would like to know if anyone out there remembers him or how he was back then.
